Consistency and approximate number
It is a best practice to present numbers consistently:
Numbers in a series or range should always be displayed using a consistent decimal value, e.g., 25.00, 3.25, 44.30 – all have two numbers after the decimal point
This best practice should be applied to fields of text and charts. The exception to this best practice is when approximate numbers are being used, e.g.,
- in text fields: "$3.4 million, $15.0 million, and approximately $44 million"
- in charts: "$3.4 million, $15.0 million, ~$44 million"
Dropping the decimal and fractional values is more appropriate. Leaving the decimal and fractional values there implies a greater degree of precision than exists.
