Tutorial for Horizontal Flows 061 – Circles with Arrows

These are great to use when you don't have a lot of text to describe each flow segment (circles are not the most efficient shape when used with text). But these shapes are simple but very pretty to use with imported photos and a small amount of text as in the series example. This type of flow will look fresh since it is such a departure from the standard flow arrows and chevrons. See the tutorial for more usage and formatting tips.

Customizing the circles with arrows

Adjust size

Group them and resize or rescale all at one time. To rescale, hold the shift key down as you resize.

Color variations

The series example uses a light gray color for the circle with arrow. This looks light and open and clean. You can, of course, choose to apply any line or fill color you wish. Just make sure that you emphasize the correct elements on your slides. In the example, the content in the circles was more important, so the circles with arrows were formatted to be subdued.

PowerPoint 2007 options

Glows and other formatting options depends on the background for your framework. If you want the framework to be distinct against a multicolor background, a glow could be the way to do this. Don't overformat your graphics. You want to keep your conceptual graphic clearly discernable. Format to increase consistency within your presentation. It's always better to err on the side of less than more if it's only for looks.

3D variations

Use 3D only of the depth is very shallow: 2-3 points.

Shadows

Drop shadows are nice if you're using PowerPoint 2007 or 2010. The shadow in PowerPoint 2003 tends to date your material.

Gradients, patterns, and pictures

Gradients and pictures are great with this series. See the FAQ on importing photographs into shapes if you don't know how to do this.

Animations

Simple reveals are usually best. We like fades, wipes, and glides look nice with these graphics.
