Framework: DD004 – dd004_v07

dd004_v07

This chart has two subdivided bar charts that use the same category labels. To save space and also avoid redundancy, the labels are placed in the center so that they identify both sets of bars. This is a good option if space is an issue. The bars on the left of the category labels are reversed, but they are still positive numbers.

A good use of this type of chart is when you are presenting two different units for the same categories of bars. It is preferred that the totals for each bar be clearly identified on the outside of the end of the bar instead of using horizontal value axis.

The segment categories are described by the use of a legend. Place the segment category labels above the first bar if space permits.

Part of series: DD004 Data-Driven Charts 004 – Subdivided Bar Charts

Series Keywords: stacked bar chart, data-driven, flag charts, segments, subdivided bars

Subdivided (stacked) bar charts contain bars that are broken into segments to equal the total - the number at the end of and outside the right-most segment. These charts show comparisons between the segment categories as well as between the overall totals of each subdivided bar.

The values within the segments show up automatically when the data is entered into the worksheet. The totals need to be calculated and added manually. The labels need to be added manually. Refer to the tutorial and FAQs for guidance on how to use and format these types of charts. Specifically, refer to this FAQ regarding adding more/deleting labels and totals. Also, look at each framework's description to understand the different uses for these charts.
