5 - Primary or Horizontal Divisions
2 - Secondary or Vertical Divisions
These layouts are good to use as a dashboard-type slide or as a starting point for the pies featured in the chart of the month for April 2007. These pies are to be used with a legend: all of the pies contain the same segment categories. There is no need to clutter the slide with segment labels when a label can be used. We usually advocate for putting the labels next to the segments, but there is too much clutter and redundancy in this case. Legends work best.

Series Keywords: pie charts, pieces of a whole; segments of whole, slices, 100%
Pie charts simply illustrate segments of a whole. The value is placed inside the slice and the label for the slice is placed outside the slice. In keeping with the "no redundancy rule" for presenting material, use a legend when multiple pies on a slide have the same labeling scheme. At this point you will need to change the color of each slice from colors in your template's palette.
When imported into your presentation template, these charts will adopt the defaults established in your presentation template. Refer to the tutorial for this series, the FAQs for working with data-driven charts, the best practices associated with data-driven charts, and the feature article for October 2006 for more information about uses and formatting.
