DD001 – Data-Driven Charts 001 – Area Charts

Area charts (surface chart) show two things: trend across time (x axis) and volume (y axis). There are basically three types of area charts:

  1. Area charts that have no defined volume established: the volumes are plotted on top of each other and the scale adjusts - actual numbers
  2. Area charts that have defined volume established: the volumes are plotted from 0-100% and the scale does not adjust - numbers plotted as percentage of whole.
  3. Area charts that have no defined volume established: all volumes are plotted from the x axis baseline and not plot on top of each other - actual numbers for each set, but the sets overlay and obscure the previous data sets. This variation is not included, as it has such a restricted use. If you need to use this type of chart format, change the chart type in PowerPoint.

The first two versions (v1 and v2) are the first type and the second two versions (v3 and v4) are the second type. Select the correct version/layout to illustrate your data.

Because this series has text in it, the text will import into your presentation according to your defaults. If you have bullet points as your top level of text, the text in these charts will import with bullet points. This is one of the reasons that we advocate for the top level of text in the master being nonbulleted, left-aligned text, followed by bulleted, indented text. Important: see the tutorial for tips on sizing, coloring, and text formatting, etc. Also, see the FAQ topic entitled, "working with data-driven templates" for other important information about this category.
